Tip 14: Find out which lifestyle factors can decrease the risk of death by 50%.
If anything could decrease the risk of death by 50%, you would think that everyone would want to know what it is and the media would shout it from the mountaintops. Who wouldn’t want to decrease their risk of dying by half? While most people have never heard of the study I’m referring to, just about everyone has at least heard of the Mediterranean diet. In 2004, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published research that followed 2,339 men and women from 11 different countries in Europe aged 70 to 90 years from 1988 to 2000. They looked at dietary patterns and lifestyle factors and created different cohorts to analyze the healthiest lifestyle choices.
The cohorts included adhering to a Mediterranean style diet, moderate physical activity, non-smokers, and moderate alcohol use. The final analysis showed that the subjects in the cohort that fit into all four of the above factors “had less than half the mortality rate from all causes.” The participants that were most compliant with the Mediterranean diet were the least likely to die from heart disease.
