Tip 55: Don’t insist there is a single, ideal weight training tempo

One problem in weight training is that many trainers are seeking THE ONE ideal workout – or at least the perfect training protocol. The problem is, this workout and this training protocol do not exist. I have been saying this for over two decades, and research is continuing to prove this is true. For example, in the February 2011 issue of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, researchers looked at two tempos for performing the bench press: one that had a four-second eccentric phase and another that had a two-second eccentric phase. The subjects were 17 healthy men, ranging from 22 to 28 years of age, all with at least two years of weight training experience and all who regularly performed the bench press. The researchers concluded that both training protocols had “few differences in hormonal, metabolic, and perceptual responses.”
